Sometimes you are in the mood for a really good burger, but only have a few bucks and change to your name. Yeah, you could get one from a fast food chain, but when was the last time you had a truly satisfying burger at McDonalds?
With only $10 to my name, I was ready for restaruant #17 of The Great Livermore Restaurant Challenge. After a quick Google search for burger joints in Livermore, I came across Ben’s Burgers.
Ben’s is definitely a dive burger joint, and I say that in a good way. While dives aren’t the most pristine of places and have their quirks, they are not for everyone. You just have to look past the rickety tables, crooked menu, and the thin film of grease that seems to be everywhere. Beyond these flaws are usually great food and great prices. That’s what gives dives like Ben’s their charm.
When you look up you’ll soon realize that there is nothing that costs more than $6 on the menu. Heck, most everything is in the $4 range. In addition to the 10 burgers they have on the menu, they also offer a selection of hot sandwiches, fries, onion rings, and other items that’ll help put you in that food coma you desire.
On the sweet side Ben’s offers something that’s perfect for the hot weather we’ve been having this week – ice cream and real milkshakes. Unfortunately I ate here a month ago, so a shake didn’t appeal to me then like it does right now in this 106 degree heat.
I kept my order simple. I went for the 1/3 lb Ben’s Combo ($6.10) plus cheese ($.50) which included a soda and fries. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked into the place. But that burger was hella good. The bun was toasted, the cheese perfectly melted, the tomato was good and it had the perfect amount of lettuce. The closest comparison I can make is to In-N-Out’s burgers. But I think I’ll give Ben’s the edge here. It just really hit the spot more than In-N-Out ever did.
I’m not the only one who has enjoyed a great meal here. Ben’s gets great reviews on all the review sites like Yelp and Urban Spoon. Of course there are haters who can’t handle the downside of dives. At least there are plenty of restaurants in Livermore for everyone.
But if you’re up for a great burger that won’t break the bank, head over to Ben’s Burgers. You can even grab it to-go, head next door, and have a nice lunch outside at May Nissen Park.
