Posada on Urbanspoon

When a good friend flies all the way from Austria to visit, you can’t take her to dinner just anywhere; you’ve got to step it up and go somewhere really good.

Since I’m taking The Great Livermore Restaurant Challenge where I try every restaurant in Livermore, I always have to try someplace new. This makes it a bit of a risk when you want to impress someone. So I pulled up the Yelp app on my phone and searched for the best restaurants in town. With 167 reviews and a 4.5-star rating, Posada topped the list for the 30th restaurant of my restaurant challenge.

Posada’s menu

Posada is a relatively new restaurant in Livermore which opened up at the end of 2013. They serve up a Southwestern menu that highlights tapas and other gourmet style Southwestern entrees (click the photo to the right to see their menu).

You’ll notice two things about their menu. Their entrees are labeled “Small Entrees,” and they don’t have quite a large selection like you see at most restaurants. While they don’t offer quantity, they do specialize in quality gourmet food.

Since we were celebrating our friend’s visit, we had to all toast with their signature drink. We order up the “Sangritas Wine Margarita Topped with Sangria.” Yep, you read that right. It’s quite a sweet drink that hides a bit of a punch. At $9 per glass, it’s not cheap either. But that’s kind of the deal with Posada, It’s a premium restaurant that offers a unique one-of-a-kind niche to the Livermore area.

As we were catching up and laughing over drinks, our food started to arrive. Here’s what we ordered:

  • Corn Tortilla Chips + Salsas ($5.00)
  • Cheese Truffles 3 Ways + Grilled Kale w/ Sweet Peppers Confetti ($10.00)
  • Chipotle-Rub Wild Caught Shrimp Tosadas + Jicama Salad ($16.00)
  • Country Style Pork Ribs in Tomato-Cilantro Sauce + Succotash Vegetables ($16.00)
  • Picadillo New Mexico Style Enchiladas with Fried Egg ($14.00)

The food was excellent – totally fresh, totally unique, and totally Southwestern. They focus on gourmet and they really do it right. The quality and flavor really does justify the cost. Just look at the photos below to see for yourself; the presentation is mouth-watering.

While they tell you up front, the down side is that the servings are small. If you’re hungry when you walk in, and order a entree and a side, you will definitely walk out hungry. So you’ll want to add appetizers or an extra entree to fill the void. Since their entrees already run between $12-$19, your bill can really add up. You should expect to spend around $30-$40 per person depending on your appetite.

Posada has a great atmosphere and offers really great food that you can’t get anywhere else around here. But what our Austrian guest think? Did she like it? When I asked, her eyes widened as she explained how she could taste seven wonderful flavors of her Jicama salad moving about her tongue in wonderful ways. Whew! Thank goodness she was happy with my dining choice.

If you are looking for a great place to eat in Livermore and don’t mind living it up a little, Posada is a must try.
