After writing about Manpuku last month as part of The Great Livermore Restaurant Challenge, I realized that I’m kind of on a sushi kick. After each sushi experience, my cravings seem to skyrocket. What is it about sushi that does this? Not everyone has a taste for raw fish, but for those that do, it’s like a drug.
I bring this up because my wife and I were driving around town looking for a place to eat, however neither of us could decide.
“What do you want to eat?” I asked.
“I dunno, what do you want to eat?” she replied.
And the endless loop begins. You know how it goes.
As we made our way down East Avenue, “Sushi Zone caught my eye. That’s all it took for that drug-like craving to take control.
I make a quick turn left turn, tires squealing barely clinging to the road. I enter the parking lot a little too fast and pull into a parking spot breaking a little too hard. As I pull out the keys I look at my wife. She has that look that I know too well.
“Are you crazy?” She asks?
“Sushi?” I reply with a grin.
Sushi Zone is a cute little place with about 8 tables and a half-dozen seats at the bar. We sat at the end of the restaurant, that way I could get a good view for a few inconspicuous photos.
My wife had the Ice Tea ($2.75) while I had a large Orion Beer ($8.95). It was a good size bottle at 833 milliliters. Not quite the full liter you’d get at Oktoberfest, but close.
Bento boxes are my wife’s go to item since she’s not a big seafood fan, though she does enjoy the rolls. Her Bento meal ($12.95) came with a salad, miso soup, rice, breaded chicken and a veggie roll.
I went for the Sushi Dinner Special ($14.95) where the chef picks your sushi. This is perfect since I’m trying get an idea of their menu. It came with a salad, miso, soup, six pieces of sushi and a California roll.
How was it? Well, I’ve only been to 3 or 4 sushi restaurants in Livermore, but this is probably my favorite so far. Some places tend to be a little dry, and others too wet. Some places use too much seasoning or salt, but Sushi Zone seems to keep it simple. Everything here was just right and the flavors were excellent.
The next time your wandering around Livermore look for a place to eat, make your way down East Avenue and give Sushi Zone a try. I’ll definitely be back!
