If you have ever driven Interstate 5 between the Bay Area and Southern California you have passed the Harris Ranch. If you have never stopped for a meal, shame on you, you have missed a great opportunity. I’m lucky that I can fly down which makes the Ranch pretty accessible any day of the week (it’s only a 70 minute flight from Livermore). If you are flying, be advised that there is a Military Operating Area (MOA) that extends over and north of the Harris Ranch airstrip (NAS Lemoore). The field is uncontrolled, paved, lighted, but only 2,800 feet in length and 30 feet wide. By the way, if you fly in, show them your pilot’s license and you will receive a 10% discount!
Recently I flew down for breakfast departing Livermore at 6 a.m., arriving at the Harris Ranch at 7:10. I ordered my usual; three eggs over medium, 8 oz. baseball cut top sirloin with sliced tomatoes, hot biscuits and coffee. It was wonderful, as always, and the service couldn’t be better. Breakfast is served in the Ranch Kitchen, rather informal, but evening dinners are served in the Jockey Club. If you stop for dinner, I recommend the Classic Steak Diane.
Not only is the Ranch a great place for dining but they also have a wonderful Inn with over 150 rooms and a 25 meter Olympic Style heated pool. I have never stayed at the Inn but I have taken the tour and seen some of the rooms, they’re unbelievable.
